3 august 2010, The Netherlands, Reestdal

In vegetation near stream, 6,3 mm long
It is a male - in females the eyes are more normal.

In Baetis i pictured a male with pillow shaped upper eyes,
but the eyes in this species are quit weird also...
I wonder which species this is

maleīs eyes, not that strange :) Iīve no idea, i "feel" Baetis is more probable than Centroptilum but I canīt tell, in case it is Baetis the colour of the eyes seems next to B. fuscatus more than to B. rhodani
- it should have 2 tails (not 3)
- it should have (though maybe very reduced) a 2nd pair of wings
Thereīs a nice and cheap book from "naturalistīs handbooks", Nr 13, (Harker, J.) but i donīt know if it will be good for Nederlands, theres a better guide now for all Europe, but not that cheap. Good luck :)

Yes, second pair of wing very reduced till about 0,5 mm and probable two tailed, but it lacks one.
And thanks for the rest of your info

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
