date: July 3rd, 2005
size: 25-30mm
habitat: around countryside house, near a pond where a lot of bees come to drink water

I don't know if the photo is suitable for identification...
Can you tell its genus?

It seems to be a species of the genus Machimus (last sternite with dense hair).

Thanks Dysmachus!
It'd been a month since I posted it and I had almost forgot about it.
Have a great 2007!

EDIT: I just realized this interesting fact: Machimus is a Greek word. Used as an adjective, it effectively means "ready for battle", while used as a noun, it refers to a soldier. How fitting to a predator like that!
