the only one Portuguese spider that its bite could trigger some serious problems to human. There is a trust report related that a Portuguese was biten by this one and triggered an acute reaction.. but this is very rare, because the spider run away from us, so... Here go two photos I've taken in last week to Zoropsis spinimana. (Zoropsidae family)  and this one:

I think ( naah , I?m almost sure) there are 2 dangerous spiders in Portugal, Iberian tarantula and a specie of mediterranean viuva.

The Latrodectus we have in Portugal IS NOT DANGEROUS. But it can deliver a painful bite and perhaps fever. But no fatal cases. Never. We have reported Latrodectus tredecimguttatus so far. Tarantula is not a correct name, it can belongs to the Nemesiidae, some Lycosidae, Atypidae, Ctenizidae. I mean: when someone tells "tarantula" I don't know which family he/she is refering. It is not a valide name for arachonolgy IN SPITE OF the fact that there are scientific names for tarentula (bad choice..). See this site aranhas.info made by a friend of mine. I'm one of collaborators.  Recently I caught a Ctenizidae spider (3 cm!) and it is safe... but I don't dare to put my finger near this spider.  |

I told the names tarantula and viuva, because they are the common names. Of course I hadn?t the intention to give the exact scientific name. On this case and I guess you know what I meant to say, there are only one iberian tarantula in the world and also only one mediterranean viuva in Portugal. Tarantula in Portugal it?s only one ( it?s genus is Lycosa). The references for these 2 dangerous species in Portugal are published in a National Geographic Society article. They don?t kill but they make you suffer a lot and may put in danger some people that have weakness because of the spider poison content. ( in Portugal we say alergia that can be seriously bad..). hmm... I would worry more about wasps/bees stings than those 2 spiders.  So far, I can tell you there are no ANY reports about spiders bites that can trigger big problems. I know many physicians and one works in authopsies. He reported to me that there are no deads so far by a bite of a spider, but there are some reports of deads by ONLY one sting of a bee. Yes, of course any illness people can do suffer more easily any bite/sting, etc. Allergies will be a worrying thing in XXI century, also the crescent paludism, and maybe resistant-bacteria to antibiotics...  |
