Hello!

I have got 2 photos of two different flies, which were 10 mm long and taken in South Tirole, Austria.

Fly 1:

Fly 2:

Can you say me the species or the genus names of these flies?

Thank you very much, Martin...

Is it not possible to determine them?

Well, you may give us some time, especially over the weekend. Wink
The first I think is a Muscidae, but hopefully someone with more knowledge of Calyptrates will come by a add his/her comment (Kahis?).
The second (I thought there was a different picture first, but I am not certain) makes me think of Rhigia campestris. I hope one of the true syrphidologists will confirm this.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
