Great photo ![]() ![]() Interestingly, we all see these "Biting Stable flies" commonly in the countryside but has anyone actually been bitten by one? I certainly haven't. Manager of the UK Species Inventory in the Angela Marmont Centre for UK Biodiversity at the Natural History Museum, London. |

Consider yourself fortunate. I was frequently bitten by them in Ontario, Canada; they always bit at ankle level or just above. This fly bit me just above the ankle and that is the only way I knew it was on me - the bite is painful, OUCH (and worse) certainly applies. This is the tip of the proboscis (best image I can get with my current set-up). Don't know what the 2 pointy things are but the outer brown 'thingees' are (I believe) prestomal teeth.
