Nobody said me that it's impossible to identify bibionids by photo... so I continue trying it despite of the unresolved previous attempts. Maybe the species with orange females are easier? Yesterday. La Peņa, Huesca, NE Spain. Pre-pyrenees, 500 meters. Lots of them in the flowers of Euphorbia characias and Euphorbia serrata. Female: ![]() ![]() Male: ![]() ![]() Could be ID to species level? If it was flying here I would say Bibio anglicus, because they have very orange females ... but not sure if you have it in the south of Europe ![]() Manager of the UK Species Inventory in the Angela Marmont Centre for UK Biodiversity at the Natural History Museum, London. |

Maybe Bibio hortulanus, they are common pests in Hungary.

Both species have orange females, the wing venation is different. This is hortulanus. Theo |
