Nobody said me that it's impossible to identify bibionids by photo... so I continue trying it despite of the unresolved previous attempts. Maybe the species with orange females are easier? Yesterday. La Peņa, Huesca, NE Spain. Pre-pyrenees, 500 meters. Lots of them in the flowers of Euphorbia characias and Euphorbia serrata. Female: ![]() ![]() Male: ![]() ![]() Could be ID to species level? If it was flying here I would say Bibio anglicus, because they have very orange females ... but not sure if you have it in the south of Europe

Maybe Bibio hortulanus, they are common pests in Hungary.

Both species have orange females, the wing venation is different. This is hortulanus. Theo |
