Hello, I photographed this fly in the Gennargentu Mountains, Sardinia (NU), Italy, 1620m a.s.l. on May 13th 2025. I think it is a Bibio, and looking at the species recorded for Sardinia the ones that look most similar to me are B. marci and B. sardocyrneus. In Haenni (2009) I read that males of the two species are distinguished based on the morphology of the hind tibiae and tarsi, so I wonder if these pictures are enough to choose one of the two options. I compared your fly with my B. marci and according to Haenni I'm quite sure that it is the Bibio sardocyrneus indeed: the hind tarsomeres are distinctly inflated while parallel-sided in B. marci. I also see that your fly's pilosity is more brownish than in B. marci as are the wings.
Greetings, Eric |
