I photographed this fly in October 2025 in Kleinottweiler, Saarland, Germany. Several morphological characteristics appear to match Micropeza cingulata, particularly the predominantly dark legs, the lighter hind femora, and the abdominal markings. However, M. cingulata is reportedly known from Russia, making its occurrence in southwestern Germany rather unlikely. Could this be a particularly dark or melanistic form of Micropeza corrigiolata instead? I would greatly appreciate any help with the identification and, in particular, any information on whether such dark forms of M. corrigiolata are known. Have a look on right hind femur. It is clearly yellow with subapical and apical black ring = M. corrigiolata without doubts. |

Hi libor, Thank you very much for the identification! The rather dark coloration of the legs had confused me, as they normally appear much more distinctly yellow than in my specimen. I have since learned that there are also darker, even melanistic specimens of M. corrigiolata. I had already suspected that it was not M. cingulata, but I wasn't completely sure. Now that I know to look at the hind femur, the diagnostic feature is much clearer. Thanks again for your help! 🪰 Volker |
