 Very strange! Found today on light. Mid Netherlands. Multiple specimens. All with small red dots on the head. Mites? Anyone have any idea what this is/are?

 Yes, mites. Water mites , probably parasitic preadult stage.
WWW.ntu.edu/museum has a good article on "water mites and midges"
A beautiful hypothesis can be slain by an ugly fact.

 The fly looks like Ceratopogonini or Culicoides.
