Diptera Gallery growing
Thank you all for keeping the site moving onwards. The Diptera Gallery is growing steadily, though it is mainly due to one major contributor. (Thank you, Gerard!) Just like the literature database I hope to develop (really, I am working on it), a gallery has the potential to grow excessively. So, please keep images as small as possible in size (bytes), so we can enjoy a growing Gallery for a long time. I realise I may have to migrate the site to larger hosting server, but may disrupt services for a while. For the same reason you may see that occasionally a forum image that was posted as an attachment is suddenly in the message itself. In that case I have uploaded it to another server and added the link to the image. That should not disrupt anything, though. Enjoy!

I do not have the impression that the amount of pictures in the Diptera Gallery is increasing much lately. On the other hand a lot of mainly very nice pictures is published on the forums. Alas, they are scattered all over the place, so it's not easy to track a picture you've once seen there. Would it be possible to ask the forum-contributors to put their pictures in the Gallery as well?

Cheers,

Date

The webspace for the site is at the moment limited to 25 MB. The amount of images potentially available is so big the I could probably fill it many times over. I will see if I can transfer Diptera.info to another provider with much more webspace in 2005.
Another glitch still in the albums is the fact that sorting is erratic. Whenever I sort them (field first, pinned next; within each group alphabetically), then the order is detroyed the when I sort another album. The problem is being dealt with (slowly) by one of the developers, but it will take some time. By keeping the number per album within limits it will not be such a tedious job to set the order later on.
For the time being, excellent images or images of rare beasties will still be added.

I was going to make the comment Date has made.
I would think that, theoretically at least, the pictures in the Forum could be included in the gallery without additional need for storage space. That woud require a link from the From message to the Gallery of vice versa. Maybe developers can devise some semi-autiomatic procedure for that? Also, it should be clear to the people posting pictures in the Forum, that they are assumed (required) to agree with publication of their pictures in the Gallery.

best wishes, louis

There is a problem in adding the images in the forum to the Diptera Gallery. The Gallery is under total control by the webmaster and all information is stored in the database (including title, who submitted the image and when it was submitted). The webmaster has no or little control over the images posted in the forum. Images there are either attachments uploaded to the Diptera.info webserver or links to remotely stored pictures. When someone decides to delete his (or her) message with an attached pictures, the image will be deleted, too. That would complicate things very much if it was also automatically added to the Gallery. Similarly, remotely stored images cannot be managed by the database for Diptera.info. As soon as a person deletes, renames or moves his (or her) images, the Diptera.info site would be in trouble. Even now, when a remotely stored image is used in the forum and the owner changes that image, we have a problem. I am trying to make a backup of those images so that in such circumstances I can put an image back into the forum when it cannot be read anymore from the remote server. My suggestion is that if you think that an image should be included in the gallery, that you let me know.

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
