Syrphidae. Venation close to that of Merodontini. No idea of that tribu is present in Surinam, but at least it should be something related... |

Two tribes to choose from... Can I be sure of Eristalinae as the subfamily?

This is Ornidia. At least obesa is a common synanthropic species. There are two other species I can not rule out from this picture (and one I can). The night pictures are dark. When shooting against a white sheet it helps to tell the camera to overexpose. |

I'm not great with the technicalities of photographing. I got the feeling my camera does not always do what it is supposed to do. There's often hardly any difference between F2.8 and F45, and changing the ISO from 100 to 400 also makes often little difference when photographing on my light sheet. Especially very dark subjects on a light background (like this one) and very light coloured subjects on a dark background are very problematic with my present camera. Anyway, if this is a syrphid it may be tranferred to the Syrphidae section so that some other experts on this family may have a look? Your invert guide in Suriname. |

The setting to use may be called "exposure compensation". Instead of setting shutter speed, ISO, or f-stop, you ask the camera to use its normal logic but expose more than it would otherwise choose. |
