Hi, I photographed this 4-5mm fly in my garden in Cape Town this morning. I think it is Tachinidae but I am unsure. How can I tell this is not Sarcophagidae? Any help appreciated.

Thank you

Philip

I am not an expert, but it looks like Sarcophagidae, Miltogramminae to me.
Greetings,

Thank you very much, Henrik

I am very early on in what I have found to be a very steep learning curve with Diptera. My impression is that it seems often to be a question of 'recognition' (and perhaps knowing what the possible candidate flies are) rather than looking for a specific feature that makes for an ID - esp. from photographs where some of the important diagnostic features may not be visible. I may be wrong though.

Best

That is called ' jizz' and the challenge is to grasp jizz in such a way that you can actually put words to it.

Yes, this is a Miltogramminae. Could not suggest a genus.

I will try to fix the messages this month. We have to make some other configuration changes before software goes out of support at end of year.
