This specimen dates from 30th August 2013, and was photographed in the UK (Ordnance Survey Grid Reference SJ500855). The semicircular yellow metanotum might be diagnostic, but I'll leave it to the experts to confirm whether this is the case.

Data for specimen:

Location: UK, OSS Grid Reference SJ500855
Date & Time:2013-08-30, 13:14 BST
Conditions: Sunny, warm, ambient temperature around 25°C, mildly breezy.

Once again, al help with ID appreciated in advance. Smile

Second photo of the same specimen. Specimen's mobility made securing a close up rather difficult. Smile

This is indeed a Syrphidae. Its a female of the genus Sphaerophoria. Unfortunately females cant be identified.

Greeting,

Elias

I recently found another specimen. Found 2014-09-10, UK, OS Grid Reference SJ 5012 8554 (photo timed at 13:36 GMT). This one might be a male. Photo attached to post. Any chance of species level ID without recourse to dissection? Smile
