In Chironomidae and related families the scape is reduced and pedicel enlarged, especially in males. This might be Orthocladiinae. I can't make out wing veins clearly. |

Thanks for the clarification, John. I still haven't seen one like this before, so it must be new for me. This is the best I can get of the venation - I really should build a setup for transmitted light for it.

Eyes seem to be bare. Dorsal view of genitalia and eyes (showing size of dorsal extension) may help, but the subfamily is very difficult. |

MND Orthocladiinae 90 antepronotal lobes like 33; plumose flagellae 94 venation like 12 96 eyes bare 111 no macrotricia 112 gonostylus simple 114 C distal to CuA Heterotrissocladius Also a photo of another specimen with a 40x objective I've just located (metallurgical lwd ones don't come up for sale often).
