Hello,

Can anyone help me please with this Psychodid fly I found today, please? (I think it is this family, but I am a complete novice, so excuse me if I have this wrong).

There were several flies on Water Dock (Rumex hydrolapathum) by a canal in Buckinghamshire, UK.

The flies are approx 6.5mm across the wings tip to tip.

Best wishes

Neil Fletcher

It is a Psychodid, all right.
Unfortunately it is not possible to identify Psychodidae species based on habitus pictures yet. There are probably species-level characters in the coloration and hair patterns, but we know very little about them since the hairs fall off in alcohol-preserved material. I'd guess that this is a species of Clytocerus (The diptera.info gallery would say Boreoclytocerus), but I am far from certain.
Of course I'll be able to provide a more precise answer if you send me some specimens in alcohol.

Many thanks Gunnar for confirmation, happy to know I get the family right!

Thank you for your offer to look at specimens, I'll be very happy to send to you, can specimens in alcohol be sent through the air mail? I've never tried this.

Please can you send me your postal address offline.

Best wishes,

Neil

I will try to fix the messages this month. We have to make some other configuration changes before software goes out of support at end of year.
