I have keyed this out as a Cecidomyiid but am unsure as the first tarsal segment is not shorter than the second.

Antennae look typical for Ceratopogonidae. The last 3-5 segments of the antenna are usually much longer than the rest. The prominent mouthparts are also consistent. Do any legs have large claws, comparable to or longer than the fifth segment of the tarsus? Note also the two radial cells. The cells are often about that size and shape in Culicoides and Ceratopogonini. The blunt-tipped abdomen is unusual. Usually it is tapered or rounded (female) or has typical male midge parts hanging off. |
