I've just tried loading two pics at the same time... it seems I can't do it. Is that right?

Anyway, this pic is, I think, of the same species, but the bright silver bands round the abdomen are confusing me. It may, of course, just be the way the sun is catching the fly.

Is this one also Eriothrix rufomaculata? What sex is this one? How do we know that?

Thanks, Ginks

(Oooh, this is exciting!)

No, this is Mintho rufiventris. I don't know if you can distinguish the sex from picture.

Hello Niels,

Thanks for the ID. I did wonder about that, it seemed too skinny for E. rufomaculata... and way too shiny.

I'm at that stage of bugging where I can't quite believe just how many species I've got in my garden, so the great compensation for having got the ID wrong is that I'VE GOT A NEW ONE TO PUT ON THE LIST... whoopeeee!

TTFN,
Ginks

PS:I've just realised that it IS a Tachinid, so I feel even better now...

Hi Ginks - I'd be really interested to get your records for this and any other tachinids - for the recording scheme Smile Just PM me the details - name, date, place, map-reference, observer's name etc. Thanks, Chris R.

PS: Mintho is considered quite rare in the UK Wink

Hello Chris,

How exciting... but I've never done this before, so etc doesn't tell me anything. I need to know exactly what info you need, please.
It may take me a while to get it all.

Erm, what does PM mean?

Best wishes, Ginks

Thanks Janet Smile

Yes, sorry Ginks - a "record" in recording terms is:
- Species name
- Date of observation
- Name of location
- Map reference for location (Landranger format like SU616796 got from streetmap.co.uk or an O/S map)
- Your name (or name of other observer)
- plus any other information you may have , like habitat or any observations that seemed relevant at the time ... like what it was doing but these are much less important and are not mandatory

Repeat that for each time you see a tachinid and put them in a spreadsheet and just email it over at the end of the season Smile

Hi Janet and Chris!

(At least that wasn't Janet and John... hmmm, am I showing my age?)

Thanks for the info. I'm too tired to record my tachinids tonight, but I'll have a go at getting the 2011 details to you sometime over the weekend.

I've never done a spreadsheet... that'll have to wait too.

I use a map ref on all my pics on Flickr, so that's not a problem.

Ginks

Hi Ginks! I remember those school books too! Shock

I don't think Chris would mind if it wasn't on a spreadsheet, we don't all have those.

I sitll have my Tachinids to record, that will have to wait until I have transferred all my photos into their specific folders I'm afraid.

Hello Boys and Girls,

I found some more pics of T. fera taken in mid Oct. Like Janet, I shall have to finish sorting out my pics before I send in my records. You never know... I might have another rarity...

You never know Wink I'll take records in any format - as long as all the data is there then that's fine Smile
