I think this might be a female Chaetorellia jaceae – images shows a fruit fly with attractive wing pictures and dazzling emerald eyes. It was on Common Knapweed at Gleddoch Burn, Barscube Hill, Renfrewshire, Scotland. Aug 21 2011. This is an area of meadow dominated by knapweed and devil's-bit scabious adjacent to a wet meadow and iris bed. I'd be grateful if ID can be confirmed/corrected. I also can't find out much about this Tephrid – but it seems pretty scarce. NBN Gateway has no records north of Leeds! Can anyone tell me a bit about its UK status. Many thanks. The wing pattern would also match Chaetostomella cylindrica which is reasonably common in Scotland. A better view of the top of the thorax would help but there appears to be no dark 'shoulder' spot which would be characteristic of Chaetorellia jaceae, so I suspect it is Chaetostomella cylindrica. |
