Mating flies - ID needed

I have had a hard job identifying these two mating flies, even though the abdomens of the male and female are quite different. Can someone help me, please? The picture was taken last month in central Burgundy and the flies are on a fence dividing two grazing fields in a rural, cattle raising area. chrisinburgundy attached the following image: ![]() [153.16Kb] |

Welcome to the forum Chris ... they look like muscid flies to my uneducated eye - maybe Musca autumnalis but one of the real muscid experts will be along soon
