France, Dordogne, 16.iv.2010
Broadleaf forest, some clearcut and secondary growth
Caught at muddy puddle mid-morning, full sun.

Short 2nd attennal segment and hind femora concave ventrally, so macquarti / fagesii

No black hairs on abdomen keys out to macquarti but I'm not sure if this is definitive?

Thanks for any suggestions,

Steve

Thanks Andre,
Yes, I'd seen those pics which had left me unsure - this specimen seems to have the long hairs on the scutellum suggesting fagesii but then it should have black hairs on the abdomen. I'll be back at the site in April - I'll just have to find some more Grin

You can always send your specimen(s) to a specialist. For France that may well be Martin Speight Wink

Thanks Andre, good idea. Are the male genitalia useful in identification of Callicera?

An update with a specimen from this year, 15th April, from the same site. This has the dark hairs on the abdomen of typical fagesii. (Also maquartii is an autumn species - Stubbs and Falk p238)
