Hi,

Have I finally got Thaumatomyia notata? Wink

22nd October, approx. 3mm long. I thought it was feeding on a fungus on top of my letter box, it turned out to be a fly head! Shock

3 pics (I have more)

I think it's not notata, notata(s) have pair bubbles end of the abdomen of males!!

Thank you Sara, it hadn't occured to me this was a male.

Interesting to note the pic in the gallery of a mating couple, the male does not appear to have those bubbles. I wonder if they are temporary?

I do have some pics of a male with the bubbles from April so I guess that might be T. notata.

yes, definitely it's male of T. notata, but I don't think these bubbles are temporary, if they jar to objects, maybe burst. these are for splatter of kinds of pheromone, course it depends to species..! Smile

Sara

Thank you once more Sara! Do you study Chloropidae? That would be great if you do! Smile

Is T. notata the only species to have these pheremone sacs?

My thesis is on Chloropidae, and I am interested that my studies in this area continue…! Smile
This subject, now, has been proved in this species, to scientific; even this investigation is still continuing in this way; and in another species, maybe current but not with sacs!!? Cool
Sincerely yours
Sara

Thank you for the offer Sara, it doesn't matter about the article although it should be interesting.

I should have mentioned the mating pair I had wasn't T. notata but it would be interesting to see if you recognised it. If you see the thread revived soon please take a look, it's funny if nothing else! Grin
