Hello Still not able to add any photos which is a shame so a quick question I have got Stubbs and Falk (just bought it) but I have noticed that there are other varieties of M equestris on this site e.g., bulborum Does anyone have a comprehensive list? if one is available? Thanks Elisabeth Edited by oceanlis2000 on 18-10-2010 11:07 |

Hi Elisabeth Well done on purchasing the excellent Stubbs and Falk Book. I hope you have also looked into joining the Dipterists Forum too? Put very briefly, names of varieties are often subjective. In the now very distant past, many insect species were described solely on colour differences from one and another. In better informed times one now looks at more stable anatomical features (especially genitalia). However many of these former (colour) names have been demoted into variety names, sometimes officially, but very often unofficially. Mark |
