Unfortunately this is the best image that I could get, but hopefully identification is possible. The subject was found in a meadow in north Cardiff, Wales. It's the first time I've seen this species and presumed that it was a hoverfly, but am not really sure. I thought that the spines on the thorax were quite unusual. Aha, it's not a hoverfly, it's a soldier fly. It seems to be Stratiomys potamida. Thanks a lot for the speedy response. Jon |
