Thanks, with it narrowed down to Tabanidae I searched the gallery and found Tabanus autumnalis which I then searched on Bioimages web site http://www.bioimages.org.uk/html/t79326.htm to find more photos. The wing pattern pretty much matches photos on that site for female. Would anyone like to confirm this for me (or reject it??) thanks Nick |

Yes, its T. autumnalis. The pattern on the abdomen of 3 rows of light grey spots is distinctive for a large tabanid. Steve |
