This little fly is from my garden in SA. It looks similar to the photos of Dolichopus Plumipes in the gallery but the brush like hairs are on the front pair of legs. Can someone maybe help with an ID?

Jorge wants me to send him all the flies in SA. Every time I post a photo he asks me to collect specimens and send it to him. At this rate we will soon have no more flies here! Glad you like the photo Roger but wish I managed to get closer for a more detailed shot.  |

Hi Paul Unfortunately it flew away before I had a chance to take more photos. I was hoping the plumes on the front legs, instead of on the second pair of legs, will help to narrow it down. Do you also think it looks similar to Dolichopus plumipes? |

It appears to be an acalyptrate fly, not Dolichopodidae. Tanypezidae comes to mind, but I have no idea whther it might look like that and even if it occurs in your part of the world...

Why not a dolichopodid, Paul, do you think there is something "wrong" in the general appearance? At least that is THE family where just this kind of plumes in the legs have been proved to occur, so I would preliminarily guess it. |

The sutures running along the face would rule out aschizan families such as Dolis. So its some sort of acalyptrate - but which I am totally unable to tell. Great fly! |

And of course the antennae are not at all Dolichopus-like... |
