Found this little one (2mm) at work last night. Looks like some species of Phytomyza going by photo's in the Gallery. I know it probably requires getting the spanners out to determine it to species level, but you never know. Roger Roger Thomason attached the following image: ![]() [103.66Kb] |

What an exhilarating colloquial expression: "spanners"! Even after the long and wasted years studying the English vocabulary this one remains a new experience for me! But does it refer to male or female genitals? This one is a female, which can be seen in the relatively sharp form of the abdomen. As a female, it will certainly remain indeterminable beyond the generic level. |

If I may presume to interpret the pearl-like utterances of my learned colleague, 'getting the spanners out' is not quite as specific as you think. It is the equivalent of 'getting down to the nuts and bolts' and relates to Roger's well-known reluctance to get his intellectual hands dirty. ![]() No doubt he will have replied yet more colloquially by the time I post this . ![]() Stephen. Thanks KWQ (A name that trips off/up the tongue...or something). "Getting out the spanners" was a reference to the tools required, (to look at the genitalia, whichever ones they use ????). A saying I picked up off my son-in-law who refers to cutlery, ie knives and forks as "spanners" ![]() Hi Stephen...Learned colleague...sounds good, if a little misplaced. In fact a lot misplaced . Bad English but WTF. (Reluctance to get his intellectual hands dirty)...Do I detect a euphemism for a lazy bast**d , which brings us back to;... Bad English....Looks like that little prat "Call Me Dave" and his gathering of inbreds are going to be forming the next Government thanks to the efforts of those on the other side of the Border.....didn't they learn anything from when we had That B*tch Thatcher. . Time to dig out the Tom Waits Albums and disappear under the stairs or end up "On the Nickel" singing "Waltzing Matilda" with Tom Traubert as it "Rains on me". http://www.youtub...re=relatedhttp://www.youtub...re=related Regards from the pissed off North Roger Edited by Roger Thomason on 07-05-2010 02:38 |

Open the aforementioned tome at a page depicting an image of the British Isles. Look at the very top of the page (or sometimes in a small box somewhere in the Moray Firth ) There you will see a small group of islands with the name Shetland Isles printed across it. Now if you look on the left hand side of the page (to the west of the land named Scotland) you will see another group of islands. This group of islands will also have a name printed on it. This name shall read The Western Isles. Here ends the lesson on geography .But as for the political make-up of Shetland, I'm sad to say that the result is as you say...Liberal. I think we are the safest seat they have . Comes of being populated by Crofters and Fishermen and being lumped together with Orkney . 60 years they have held on to it, and they had 60% odd of the votes this time.Disillusioned...Roger |
