I am not a star in photography, yet....give it a try.

This Sarcophagid was collected in January 2001 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
For the specialists interesting? What genus and what species?

thanks,

Until now no reaction! There are two possibilities:
1. it is too obvious! How is it possible that mr van der Weele has no idea it is naturally a.......
2. it is too complicated, because the photo is not clear enough.

In order to know which genus from an Arab Sarcophagididae what characteristics are absolutely required?

You forgot 3.
3. Sarcophagid specialists are scarce enough as it is and those precious few who know anything about them will not burn their fingers on something from Saudi Arabia.

My opinion on this fly: Sarcophaga sensu lato.

Well, Paul, indeed. The third option is far more friendly towards me. Thanks! I hope that the fly is interesting to the few specialist. I think that only occasionally you have the chance of seeing flies from Saudi Arabia.
In fact I have another specimen and some muscidae. They were all collected in my hotelroom and on the balcony.

Well, to be honest, Sarcophagidae and Muscidae do not make my heart beat faster, even if they are from Saudi Arabia...

Ruud,

Sarcophaga is a difficult genus and most specialist only identify male specimen with genitalia dissected.

Your pictures are nice, but the specimen shown is a female. Some species might be identified by the female if the local fauna is well known.

You may send the specimen to me, as I have got some experience with Sarcophagidae from Yemen. But I do not pretend to be a specialist in that fauna.
Otherwise you might send specimens to Thomas Pape (the world specialist on Sarcophagidae), and hope that he has time to have a look at it.
Or you might try to make a picture of a close up ot the genitalia: we need a ventral view and a distal view of T6 etc (the red part).

Good luck

Liekele

Well, Liekele, this is quite simple. I live in Culemborg, so we are practically neighbours. So bringing is almost as easy as sending, if not easier.

cheers,

Ruud

Liekele informed me that the specimen most likely belong to Sarcophaga ruficornis.
