This tabanid was one of several hovering in Ampthill Park, Bedfordshire, UK early in the morning on 21st June 2009. Any ideas?

Hybomitra male, most likely distinguenda or muehlfeldi.

Did you collect it ?

Hi Theo.

I did collect it. I've been looking up H.distinguenda. On my specimen the grey triangles on the median stripe are very small and short. And there are black hairs visible on sternite 2 which seems to suggest that this is, indeed, H. distinguenda.

Thank you so much for your help,

Stephen.

Male distinguenda and muehlfeldi are very very similar

Crucial is the complete row of blonde hairs on tergite 1 at hind margins

All other features are unreliable in my experience.

Yes, the row of blond hairs is there - I will write this down for future reference,

Thankyou again,

Stephen.
