Is this Loxocera and if so, is it possible to determine which species? I have a few more photos showing slightly different angles, though none of them are particularly sharp - it was at a distance and constantly moving.

27/8/2009; Devon, England

Thanks

Perhaps Loxocera aristata. I have never seen this species myself, so I'm not at all sure. Wait for someone to confirm/correct the identification.

did you collect it ?

I agree, it is L. aristata or.... maculata, a doubtful species I got in numbers this year. I asked some month ago about its status, but alas, no response.

I was just starting to doubt my first guess and thinking that it might afterall be just L. albiseta. It's a pitty we can't see the head from the front. Maybe the other pictures might be helpfull even if they are not that sharp.

No I didn't collect it. Theo - probably couldn't have reached anyway. I'm afraid all the other shots show even less of the front end; it was, as I said, moving continuously. Thanks for your your help, both of you.

The frons seems too dark for albiseta.

L.maculata doesn't appear to be on the British checklist. If I see it again I'll know to check the head. Thanks guys.

As aaid, the status of the species is doubtful,
Moreover, I cannot distinguish your pic between aristata and maculata. that is why I asked if it had been collected.

In my old key, Loxocera aristata is not supposed to bear a prescutellar pair of dc (I guess one), and antennae should not exceed the head length.
Stephane.
