Hi, This nice little Dolichopodid I saw yesterday evening, eating honeydew and sometimes also a honeydew producer. Can it be named? Many thanks, Sundew Sundew attached the following image: [160.36Kb] Edited by Sundew on 18-07-2009 23:18 |

Chrysotimus molliculus (Fallén, 1823) (male) You have already inserted dead fly into Gallery. Now you have live ones. Igor Grichanov |

Dear Igor, I have one more question: The dead Chrysotimus I posted had a very crumpled abdomen; however, the colour of it was recognizably yellow with a dark tip. The fly above has metallic greenish tergites. - Today I saw a tiny Dolichopodid with just that yellow abdomen and dark tip and thought: "Now I see a living Chrysotimus!" Unfortunately, the photos are a bit blurred because it was quite windy. Now tell me, please: do these two flies belong to the same species (perhaps male and female)? Or which one is the real Chrysotimus molliculus? Thanks again, Sundew Sundew attached the following image: [143.16Kb] |

The females of the genus Chrysotimus generally have a yellow abdomen. |

Right. I think both male and female belong to Chrysotimus molliculus (fortunately Germany has only two species so far)

Many thanks, Stefan and Igor! So I'll add a living male and female to the gallery. The dead one looks so sad... |
