Can anyone suggest a family for this fly? It seems like it should be related to the Bombylidae or Tabanidae but I am not sure.

Location: Mtn. de Kaw, French Guiana.
Date: November 2008
Coll: Jean A. Cerda
Size: 21mm (tip of proboscis to tip of abdomen)

Yes Tabanidae, yes Pangoniinae, many species and genera in the neotropics.
Hairy eyes suggest tribe Scionini

This one is Scionini- genus Fidena subgenus Fidena. This is a diverse genus I can't ID this to species right now. This has an open M3 cell whereas it is closed in Scione

Very impressive Keith - I can see I will have to take more photos of Theo's neotropical tabanids! Wink

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
