Saw this yesterday (22/4/2008) in southern England. Is it Syrphus vitripennis or ribesii? Is the yellow area on the femora big enough to be ribesii?

The colour of the femora is of no use to distinguish ribesii males from vitripennis. The crucial characters (microtrichia on cell bm, shape of probasisternum, setae on posterior mesocoxite) are usually not visible on fotos.

Cheers,
Dieter
