Term Fauna Europaea
Explanation Searchable database (classification, taxa, country checklists) where the scientific names of all European land and freshwater animals are brought together in one authorative database. Europe includes mainland Europe, the Baltic States, Russia, Belarus, European Turkey etc. plus the Macaronesian islands (excl. Cape Verder Is.), Cyprus, Franz Josef Land and Novaya Zemlya, the Western Kazakhstan excluded.
Some entomologists will treat the used classification as generally accepted standard. However, it should be noted that that the classification is usually the one accepted by the specialist(s) responsible for the group, whereas other specialists might favour another classification.
