 Strange Geomyza tripunctata? --> G. tripunctata or G. nartshukae

Hello, this fly reminds me of Geomyza tripunctata. I only know G. tripunctata with a gray-black thorax, but this is red-brown. Is it G. tripunctata or another species? This is probably Geomyza hackmani (see https://diptera.i...d_id=14622 for more information). It seems to be a male, so the shape of the genitalia would allow for an unambiguous differentiation from G. balachowskyi. Regards, Sundew Edited by Sundew on 18-07-2020 23:25 |

Hello. I'm not an expert but I think it`s G. tripunctata. The spot near to R1 is a characteristic this species shares with G.nartshukae, but i thik that it lacks in hackmani or balachowski. As to thorax colour, it's very variable, i think. |

So we urgently need the opinion of our expert Jan Willem! I am aware that there are some strangely strong spots, but I cannot remember a case when a specimen with a brown thorax was identified as G. tripunctata... On the other hand, Malcolm Storey gives a picture of just such an animal: https://www.disco...mp;res=640. That is exciting - now I really would like to know, too! |

This is a male of either G. tripunctata or G. nartshukae. The reddish thorax would point to the latter, but unfortunately the coloration of the thorax is very variable in the G. tripunctata. It seems like especially in Southern Europe, the thorax tends to be more reddish brown, but I see more and more specimens from the Netherlands which also have a rather reddish brown thorax. To be sure the genitalia should be studied.
