SW France yesyerday. In a hosta under a birch. About 4 mm long. How far can we go with this pic: family, sub-family, tribe, further ? I tried to find out with the help of Ian MacGowan'key, but I cannot see the discriminating setaes. The overall appearance and the colors direct me to Lonchaeini, but I feel like I am playing dice. Ian may be able to help on this one, but personally I wouldn't try further than family from a photo.

Hi Lippo Given the size, robust body and long antennae its definitely Lonchaeini. That leaves us with 2 genera Lonchaea and Silba (= Setisquamalonchaea in the British Handbook) The entirely black legs, large size and perhaps a hint of the orange-yellow calypteral fringe at the base of the wings would make me suspect Silba fumosa which is common in Mediterranean areas hope this helps .........
