My guess is Myopa vicaria, but I am not sure at all. Who can help?

Yes, looking good. Moreover, the earliest of Myopa, though tessellatipennis is also on the wing now.

Hello Matzke-Hajek & theo,

From this angle the hairs on the abdomen do not look long enough for vicaria. This could also be M. testacea. For that we need to see the markings on the wing.

Kind regards,

The thorax is strongly reddish in front of scutellum, which is atypical in testacea. The darkening in the wing is relatively strong (for a testacea-group). And if you look over the hind tibia, hairs on tergite are long and perpendicular. Don’t be misled by hairs on tergite 2-3.

So, though little is certain in life, this points to vicaria, in my opinion.

I will try to fix the messages this month. We have to make some other configuration changes before software goes out of support at end of year.
