Hello fellow dipterists,

I wonder if you can help me identify this hoverfly with yellow-furried eyes.

It was found resting on a scarlet sage (Salvia splendes) leaf. I'm at the southernmost state of Brazil, near Uruguay.

Thanks in advance.

Family Tachinidae.

It must be recognizable based on head structure but I don't know it.

Oh oops, wrong Family...

Thanks, John.

I was checking the Gallery just now and Peleteria ruficornis comes really close.

It is not Peleteria which has different antennae. I think it belongs to subfamily Exoristinae.

I have some literature for Tachinidae of Central America and Patagonia, but tropical South America is a big mystery.

As well known, I am very reluctant to comment on Neotropical Tachinidae due to lack of experience, but in this case, first, second and third impression is Exoristini.

I thought the first post-sutural supra-alar was too big, but otherwise it could be Exoristini.

I will try to fix the messages this month. We have to make some other configuration changes before software goes out of support at end of year.
