Hi,

I'm not sure about the ID of this Chorisops. The face has some black hairs (suggesting C. tunisiae), but the pterostigma is dark and the hind basitarsus is not thickened before middle (suggesting C. tibialis). Can C. tibialis have black hairs on the face?

Doubtful. The pale markings on the tergites appear too large for tibialis and the records may be too late in the year for that species. Perhaps it is masoni (pale markings too small) but the key I have relies of characters in the genitalia (although I have my doubt about the quality of the key iun general) and I do not have to original description of masoni to check other characters than those mentioned in the key. Chorisops caroli is also similar but should have a more blue-ish metalic mesonotum.

Thank you Paul, I'll leave it as Chorisops sp. I have the description of masoni, I'll send to your email.

Hello Paul & Rui Andrade,
I have some experience with identifying Chorisops from both North-West and Southern Europe. I cannot make out the terminalia from the photo. But the abdominal marking concur perfectly with C. tibialis. See also: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/258065960_Updated_Italian_checklist_of_Soldier_Flies_Diptera_Stratiomyidae
Greetings,

Thank you Ectemnius! A pity that I cannot show the genitalia better. Sad I'll label the specimen Chorisops cf. tibialis. TumbsUp

I will try to fix the messages this month. We have to make some other configuration changes before software goes out of support at end of year.
