Year after year I have Germaria ruficeps in my garden in august, feeding om Pastinaca sativa. It´s rather common. But Tschorsnigs key sais it´s rare. A search on this site gives one match (besides my own), and The Swedish Species Observation System (Artportalen) has zero reports (besidees my own). Is it really rare? It´s a rather big fly so it shouldn´t be overlooked, I think? Sweden near Stockholm. amaira attached the following image: [177.22Kb] |

Dear Amaira Yes, it is Germaria and yes, Germaria is pretty rare indeed. It is definitely not easily overlooked ! Nice garden you have ! * if you could, please collect 2 males. Joachim Ziegler (Berlin) is reviewing this genus * hosts are Sesiidae. So start thinking about Sesiidae present in your garden Greetings Theo |

Thankyou very much Theo! Sesiidae, interesting, I didn´t know. You don´t see them easily, but I have seen Pennisetia hylaeiformis here some times. I have one male and two female G. ruficeps pinned myself, and I will certinly try to find two more males. I send you a mail when (if) I get them, sooner or later. Last I saw some of them was 3 days ago. Greetings/ Anne-Marie |

Excellent. Pennisetia is rare and difficult to find in Central Europe. Would make an interesting host ! Theo |
