Hi,
could this be Clusiodes caledonicus? Found on a log in a park in Vienna.

All requests are from the urban area of Vienna, if not otherwise stated.

My Diptera observations (and other living forms) can be found here, and corrections or comments over there would also be appreciated.

No Clusiid experts around? Anybody knows of a family key for European species?

Londsdale, O. & S.A. Marshall, 2007. Redefinition of the genera Clusiodes and Hendelia (Diptera: Clusiidae: Clusiodinae), with a review of Clusiodes. Studia dipterologica 14: 117-159.

Looks like the post-vertical bristles (lying directly behind the ocellar triangle) may have been broken off. If not, it would point to C. verticalis. Having a better view on the genitalia might give information to come to an identification.

Unfortunately, I cannot get access to the paper, should the genitalia better be seen lateral or ventral?
C. verticalis has not been reported from Austria. Anyways, I will try to get better images next week.

Cheers, Lorin

I looked at it again: 3 fronto-orbitals and a thin postvertical bristle. So that would make it C. albimanus?

But on the same log (different month), also found this fly and could it be Clusiodes verticalis this time?

I will try to fix the messages this month. We have to make some other configuration changes before software goes out of support at end of year.
