Dear All,

www.naturedugard.org/images/4/3333.jpg

I took this photo in South of France, Gard, Fournès, the 21/06/2011.

On insecte.org forum we think to a Bombylisoma because of the nervation. But I can't find something similar in some pictures seen on the Web.

Which will be your diagnostic ?

Thank you,

Jean-Laurent Hentz

It is Systoechus.

Thank you to put us on the good railway...

If I can eliminate S. ctenopterus with his black hair in the yellow fur, could I propose S. longirostris or is it too much presomptuous ?

An other question with this picture : does the color of the eyes change with sex ou age of the fly ? Because pictures show dark eyes or red eyes as mine.

It is not the wing nervation of Systoechus.

Wing venation would be consistent with Bombylisoma, if I see it well.
Greetings,
Henrik

Bombylisoma for sure, no shadow of doubt. The trouble is to give a positive ID for the species with only this picture. A more frontal view would be very welcome. If it turns out to be a female, there might be a chance it is B. melanocephalum (bold sexual dimorphism in this species). But again, with only this picture I would keep it as Bombylisoma sp.

Thank you.

I have no other picture but for sure I will be vigilant if I return in this part of the Gard.
