Hello, I would like to ask which book is a better of identification Syrphidae? Hoverflies of Northwest Europe: Identification Keys to the Syrphidae (Englisch) Taschenbuch – Januar 2010 von M. P. Van Veen (Autor) or Flies: The Natural History and Diversity of Diptera (Englisch) Gebundene Ausgabe – 25. Oktober 2012 von Stephen A. Marshall (Autor)? or someone could recommend a good one?

The latter book does not provide an identification key... Of course, for keys in general, it depends on the region where your material comes from. Wink

For Romania, there is a comprehensive key, although a bit dated, which is still a key reference for European Syrphidologists :
Bradescu, V., 1991. Les Syrphides de Roumanie (dipt., Syrph.). Clés de détermination et répartition. Trav. Mus. Hist. Nat. “grigore Antipa” 31 : 7-83; 543 fig.

otherwise, there are keys for several genera published in :

Speight, M.C.D. & Sarthou, J.-P. (2015) StN keys for the identification of the European species of various genera of Syrphidae (Diptera) 2015/Clés StN pour la détermination des espèces Européennes de plusieurs genres des Syrphidae (Diptères) 2015. Syrph the Net, the database of European Syrphidae, Vol. 86, 129 pp, Syrph the Net publications, Dublin.

a key to genera is also available in the same series.

To get this publication contact : speightm@gmail.com or sarthou@ensat.fr
