My friend, Lynette Knot Rudman, Grahamstown, South Africa has come up with another challenge that I thought would be better checked by those who know better than I. It looks like a rather world weary Oestrid, but opinions please? Two photos: jonrichfield attached the following image: ![]() [87.26Kb] Edited by jonrichfield on 19-03-2015 20:14 |

Thanks Zeegers, you seem to have hit it spot on. Any ideas whether its appearance might be mimicry, or otherwise functional. Somehow mimicry of an oestrid seems a bit pointless... ![]() I'll go and adjust my title accordingly. |

Jon I don't think it is an Oestrid-mimic. It is simply a Tachinid with a big head, just as there are many Oestrids with normal heads. Theo |

This must be Gonia bimaculata, the type species of Gonia. |

John, thanks for that. Good enough for me! Sorry about the delayed response. Cheers, Jon Scientists often display a human failing: whenever they get hold of some new bit of truth, they decide it is the whole truth. GG Simpson |
