I have classified this fly as a S. ribesii but I'm no longer sure. Could it be S. torvus?
Found in Portugal, a few day ago.

Thanks,
Joaquim

Females are rather easily specifiable as to the colour of the hind legs. S. ribesii has completely yellow hind femora; I think I can see that through the wing. Besides, the eyes of S. torvus are hairy (compare http://farm3.stat...5520_o.jpg). So stick to S. ribesii!

Ah - I see, the shape of the yellow bands is indeed different! In Syrphus the middle part of the bands is usually narrowed, so Epistrophe fits better, though the bands should be more orange than yellow... The dullness of the mesonotum is vexing - once I posted a fly with a comparable mesonotum (http://www.dipter...d_id=13355) that was identified as a Syrphus. Some specimens of Epistrophe and Syrphus (and Parasyrphus) might be quite difficult to tell apart!
