Robberflies are not my specialty. Could it be Machimus cingulatus (Tolmerus cingulatus)?

Size: 2-3 cm in length.

Habitat: Lush clearing in a beech forest interspersed with meadows, ponds and wetlands. Considerable grazing by red deer and fallow deer. Lots of fallen, decaying tree trunks and the fly is sitting on one of those.

Place: J?gersborg Dyrehave, northeastern Zealand, Denmark.

Date: September 8, 2006

Seems to be a male Tolmerus atricapillus. Colour of legs and colour of dusting is different in cingulatus
[see http://www.asilidae.de/index.htm?tolmcia1.htm ].
Cingulatus has also a shorter arista. The projecting tab on the 8. sternite seems to be obscured by the shadow of the abdomen.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
