Is this a Robber Fly in the family Asilidae? Any idea on the genera? Photographed in Sitka, Alaska on August 18, 2012.

Thanks,

Bob

I think Bibio nigritus Curran, 1924, or Bibio bryanti Johnson, 1929 if that is a distinct species. They used to be synonyms. I have not seen the latest literature on northern Bibio.

The key to North American species (Hardy, 1945) relies on length of inner spurs of fore tibia and r-m crossvein relative to basal section of Rs. Those are not clearly visible. Most guesses lead to dead ends. One leads to a species that matches your photo.
