This is another of the Bombyliid species seen on my recent tour to Bulgaria. I think this might be Systoechus ctenopteris or similar but would welcome suggestions confirming or correcting this tentative identification if possible. It was found at a roadside stop near Bansko on 27 June 2013.

Many thanks

Alan

Hello Alan,

This could be Sysoechus, yes. However. It could easily be a Bombylius. The difference is only visible in a lateral shot of the eyes. Then there are eight European species of Systoechus and I have currently no idea how to seperate them.

Greetings,

Ectemnius

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
