Hello

the diameter of the blue veronica is less than 15mm. So the flies are verry smal. They came soon after the snow melted away. I met them all near the bottom.

Are they Parasyrphus punctulatus?

in my opinion, yes. It is easy to confuse with P. maculatus, yuo should look at the colour of stigma ( after M. P. van Veen)
Best wishes,
Amalia

Since the pterostigma is light, it should be P. punctulatus.

I would say three out of four is a good score for parasyrphus punctulatus. GrinGrin
In my opinion the first picture (Upper left) shows a male of Melangyna lasiopthalma. The shape of the spots on the abdomen is more square and the color of the scutellum is different!

Hi,
The male certainly looks like Melangyna, possibly M lasiopthalma.
