I've been asked to inquire if Simulium posticatum has ever been recorded in Ireland, by a correspondent who suspects that small flies responsible for bites inflicted upon friends and relations in the Galway area may be this species.

According to Fauna Europeaea, there's no data for this species in Ireland, but I thought it wise to come here and tap into any more specialist knowledge some of the professionals in the field who post here may possess. Smile

If not S. posticatum, then what could the culprit be? Description I've been given is of a fly that resembles a miniature house fly, approximately 4mm long, but sadly no more details than this (most members of the public aren't trained entomologists, of course).

Many thanks in advance.

Bass (1998) in FBA55 quotes Crosskey (1991): Currently unrecorded from Ireland.
