Banded legs, patterned thorax, and silvery spots on abdomen of male are considered synapomorphies for a group containing about 12 of the 22 holarctic subgenera of Simulium. If the basal section of R is bare dorsally the count drops to 11, and most members of subgenus Simulium s. str. have lost the patterned thorax. That comes from the review of North American Simuliidae by Adler, Currie, and Wood (2004). I don't have any guides specifically for Europe. |
